GLOBAL OBESITY
“Globesity” a word first used by the World Health Organization (WHO) implying that the World is getting fat. Lack of fitness is now the leading cause of preventable death. Below are facts related to obesity in the United States:
Behind these statistics are personal stories of needless suffering or death - not of strangers, but of family members, friends, even ourselves. Instead of exercising more and eating less, we are eating more and exercising less. To reach your target health via weight, the more you lose, the more of you there is - helping you contribute to your family, business, and community.
For the sake of humanity, cities around the world are spending taxpayer money on public fitness spaces such as running tracks, sports fields, and workout equipment within walking distance of your home - making it as convenient as possible to exercise in your neighborhood.
You spend the majority of your time at home and work. If you live in a luxury apartment or home, many developers provide a full-size gym as a wellness amenity to attract loyal tenants. All you need to do is go downstairs and use the gym.
For people who live in a home or apartment without a gym, you can deduct purchase of in-home gym equipment as a medical expense with a doctor’s letter stating the equipment is a prescription for you to lose weight in treating obesity, diabetes, heart disease, or another health issue.
At work, many companies and commercial real estate developers invest in onsite gyms for employees to use as companies understand that a healthy workforce reduces healthcare costs and improves work productivity. With time as the most common excuse commuting to the gym, you can cancel your gym membership now with gyms available at your work and home.
Having personally overcome obesity 3 times (childhood, college, and adult), I never wanted to risk being morbidly obese ever again so started being proactive instead of reactive with my exercise and nutrition or end up being buried in a fat casket from premature death. Unlike smallpox which was virtually eliminated through vaccination - there is no vaccination for obesity and lack of fitness. As such, I realized that physical health is not a commodity to be bargained for, nor can it be swallowed in the form of drugs and pills. Health has to be earned through blood, sweat, and tears.
Thru personal experience, if I had continued staying fat, I would have suffered the same pain as the 2.2 billion overweight people - unable to actively play with your children, look great physically in public, get a great job as employers discreetly discriminate against fat people who are a large medical expense for companies, poor sex life, enjoy life functions such as fitting comfortable into an airplane seat without nearby passengers giving you disgusted stares, move around without losing your breathe, and stay away from sickcare (situation where you have to rely on the healthcare system for preventable medical issues thru exercise).

MEASURING OBESITY-BMI
Humans are one of the most fascinating species in the world as our weight affects our self image. People understand that being healthy helps one feel and look good, but putting that knowledge to action is tough.
Fitless people, as portrayed in the movie “Wall-E,” possess physical deficiencies that lead to an unfulfilling personal life and business career. Plato said “To succeed in life, perfection is achieved thru education and exercise.” Having a fit body sharpens your mind to pursue your dreams.
So how do you know whether you’re overweight or obese? The standard assessment for people older than 20 is called the Body Mass Index known as the BMI that is a measure of body fat based on your weight in relation to your height. Being overweight is defined as having a BMI greater than or equal to 25 and lower than 30, while obesity is defined as having a BMI equal to or greater than 30.
America is #1 globally in many categories such as having the most prestigious universities and disposable income, but is also #1 in the wrong categories such as having the worst life expectancy, infant mortality, and obesity rate in the world.
Global Obesity or “Globesity” as coined by the World Health Organization (WHO) is real with 9 out of 10 Americans expected to be overweight by 2030. Currently, ⅓ of the world or 2.1 billion adults are overweight.
When looking at obesity alone (BMI over 30), America is the fattest in the world with 35% of the population or 78 million obese adults. China follows at a distant second with 46 million obese and India third with 30 million obese adults.
The 2008 Disney Film “Wall E” depicted the future obese world with people hovering around in mobility scooters watching ads and sipping soft drinks all day. 10 years later in 2018, Hollywood is not too far off from reality with people streaming TV from their couch 4 hours a day as if watching TV was their part-time job, wasting their time in a virtual world playing Fortnite shooting game, or scrolling thru social media for depression.
Not caring for your waistline will kill your bottom line as evident with the United States spending $344 billion of healthcare budget on obesity in 2018 which is 20% of the total healthcare budget. Being overweight (BMI > 25) increases your susceptibility to health risks such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and chronic kidney disease. It’s worth knowing that 70% of deaths are lifestyle related and preventable, but people still fail to be proactive with their fitness resulting in 17.5 million people dying annually from cardiovascular disease - the equivalent of four jumbo jets or 2,000 people crashing every hour, every single day, every year.
GLOBAL OBESITY
“Globesity” a word first used by the World Health Organization (WHO) implying that the World is getting fat. Lack of fitness is now the leading cause of preventable death. Below are facts related to obesity in the United States:
- Obesity leads to diabetes, cancer, amputations, mental health issues, and even death
- Losing 7% of your body weight in as little as 3 months can improve your insulin performance by 57%
- In 2018 per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Health Statistics Report, the average BMI for men was 29.1 and 29.6 for women. This is concerning as a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. One is considered overweight with a BMI between 25 to 29.9 and obese with a BMI over 30. 66% of Americans are overweight and 33% of Americans are obese. Globally, 2.2 billion people are overweight and 400 million people have diabetes. There are more overweight people (2.2 billion) than the 600 million people worldwide who are starving for food
- Professionally, medical costs to care for patients with obesity are $210 billion per year in the United States. Obesity also affects companies where employees experience job absenteeism and lower productivity at work
- Obese adults have a 50-100% increased risk of premature death. The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion estimates 300,000 premature deaths from obesity each year
- Children learn lifestyle habits from their adult parents. Children with an obese parent have an 80% chance of becoming obese adults when they grow up
- 1/3 of cancer deaths are related to poor diet and lack of exercise
- 80% of people fail to meet WHO’s Health Guideline of exercising 3 times per week
- 60% of new gym members, especially during the month of January for New Year’s Fitness Resolutions, quit going to the gym 2 months after signing up.
- 80% of the 55 million Americans with gym memberships don't go to the gym
- People are often shy reaching out for help in the gym so go thru weight battles on their own - sometimes failing and dying
- Per the FBI crime clock, a violent crime is committed every 26.3 seconds - leading many citizens to learn unarmed and armed combat
- Per RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network), Americans are sexually assaulted every 98 seconds - leading to many self defense classes for men and women
- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as well as the World Health Organization recommends adults exercise at least 3 times per week to avoid health issues such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, leg amputations, and even death
