FIVE ELDERS OF SHAOLIN - 581 AD
Shaolin Buddhist Monks are the guardians of Kung Fu martial arts who train in kung fu for self-defense against bullies and bandits. In Hollywood, the most famous Kung Fu practitioners are Bruce Lee, his master IP Man, Gordon Liu, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Michael Jai White, Wu Jing (Wolf Warrior), Ray Park, Scott Adkins, Robert Downey Jr. (“Ironman” movies), Christian Bale (Batman) and Michelle Waterson (UFC Fighter). In 1993, Jason Scott Lee famously portrayed Bruce Lee in the martial arts film “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story” and in 2012 documented his training at Shaolin in the documentary “Secrets of Shaolin with Jason Scott Lee.” Some of the best Kung Fu movies are “Five Shaolin Masters” featuring David Chiang; “Enter the Dragon,” “Fist of Fury,” and “The Chinese Connection” featuring Bruce Lee; “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin,” “Clan of the White Lotus,” and “Right Diagram Pole Fighter” featuring Gordon Liu; “Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow” and “Drunken Master” featuring Jackie Chan; “The Invincible Armour” featuring Hwang Jang Lee, “The Shaolin Temple” featuring Jet Li, “Five Deadly Venoms” featuring Chiang Sheng; “The Prodigal Son,” and “Warriors Two” starring Sammo Hung; “Ip Man” featuring Donnie Yen, and “Fatal Contact” featuring Wu Jing.
For over 1,000 years, Shaolin kept their distance from the Chinese government until the Qing Dynasty defeated the Ming Dynasty in China. In defense of the Ming in 1673, 128 Shaolin monks defeated Qing’s army of without suffering a single casualty. Worried of the Shaolin monks resistance in 1723, Qing sent an army outnumbering the monks 10:1 that killed 110 of the 128 monks. 70 days later, only 5 of the surviving 18 monks remained - Ng Mui, Jee Sin Sim See, Bak Mei, Fung Dou Dak, and Miu Hin. The Five Elders martial arts have been passed down to current martial artists. This massacre is on par with “Star Wars” Anakin Skywalker turning to the “dark side of the force” in murdering skilled Jedi in the Jedi Temple.
Ng Mui’s most famous lineage of martial artists are IP man and his student Bruce Lee. Ng Mui started teaching Wing Chun, Dragon Style, and White Crane when she saved a 15-year-old girl from a bandit who was trying to force her into marriage. Ng Mui made Wing Chun easy to learn without the need for physical strength - making Ng Mui’s style female-friendly.
Reverend Master Leader Jee Sin Sim See is famous for training folk hero Wong Fei Hung and his father. When the leader of the Shaolin Temple Hong Mei (“Red Eyebrows”) died, Jee Sin Sim See became leader and Bak Mei was upset because Jee Sin Sim See’s loyalty was to the Ming dynasty. As such, Bak Mei left the monks to join the Qing Army and returned once more to Shaolin to kill Jee Sin Sim See by breaking his neck.
Bak Mei is the most famous of the Fiver Elders known as the “Taoist with White Eyebrows” played by Gordon Liu in the “Kill Bill” film. As a traitor and now member of the Qing Army, Bak Mei trained 50,000 Imperial troops. For revenge, Bak Mei died of poisoning by martial artists.
Fung Dou Dak saved herbal medicine manuals and escaped through a secret tunnel during the Shaolin massacre. To avoid being caught as a Buddhist by the Qing Army, Fung Dou Dak converted to Taoism.
Miu Hin is the father of Miu Tsui Fa and the grandfather of folk hero Fong Sai-Yuk. After escaping the Qing Army massacre, Bak Mei wanted more political involvement and more students while the other four elders favored the opposite. The disagreement led to a duel between Jee Sin and Bak Mei - resulting in the death of Jee Sin. Angered by Jee Sin's death, Miu Hin challenged Bak Mei but was also killed. After observing Bak Mei's techniques in killing Jee Sin and Miu Hin, Fung Dou Dak challenged Bak Mei to a final duel - defeating Bak Mei who later died from injuries and poisoning.
