MALE ERECTILE POWER
There are personal topics that men keep to themselves such as skin care, hair loss, erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation. We see evidence of this stigma in the TV Show “Office US,” where Andy gets defensive about his erectile dysfunction when co-workers asked if he had “penile softiosis.” Erectile dysfunction is the inability for men to maintain an erection sufficient for sex - affecting 30 million American men according to the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins University. The Massachusetts Male Aging Study reported that 40% of men are affected with ED at age 40 and nearly 70% of men are affected with ED at age 70.
Psychologically, ED can be caused by poor communication with your sex partner, stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Physically, ED can be caused by smoking, drug abuse (cocaine, marijuana, heroin), spinal cord injury, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, low testosterone, high cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), sleep disorders, alcohol, and insufficient exercise (i.e. 180 minutes of exercise per week for adults).
What’s dangerous is that having ED is a precursor of future underlying health conditions such as heart attack, strokes, high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, depression, sleep disorders, or hormonal imbalances.
In order for men to satisfy their love partner, some spend money on medications that relax muscles and boost blood flow to the penis for an easier erection. These medications typically last for 2 hours with some side effects such as headache, indigestion, nasal congestion, and impaired vision.
Infertility is also a major issue. Influenced by bodybuilders to get “huge,” many men take steroids as a teenager and pay the price when they want to give birth with their wife in their thirties because steroids shut down your body’s natural production of testosterone. Millions of sperm are released during sex and men who suffer infertility feel dejected when their semen analysis reveals a zero sperm count - thus preventing the men from getting his wife pregnant to give birth. This is shocking to many men who deem themselves macho because they work out, have tattoos, and have muscles, but their biggest mistake is taking steroids. A 2017 infertility survey conducted by De Montfort University in England revealed that 93% of infertile men felt depressed, lonely, suicidal, and anxious about a future without children. But nearly 40% of men don’t seek support due to social stigma of being macho but incapable of producing children.
Instead of relying on medications all the time for sex or steroids, men can prevent erectile dysfunction and infertility by quitting smoking, eliminating steroids, exercising, eating healthy, avoiding alcohol, reducing stress, and quitting drugs. JustHuynh Fitness’ program of martial arts and power athletics can help men stay fit for an enjoyable sex life.
