Martial arts helps baseball players with hand-eye coordination and agility on the field.
Sadaharu Oh, who has 868 career home runs, struggled early in his career with the Yomiuri Giants until he met hitting coach Hiroshi Arakawa who fused the sword-based martial art of Aikido with baseball. Oh overcame the stereotype that “short and weak” Asians can’t hit home runs.
Noting Sadaharu Oh’s success, Cleveland Indians Francisco Lindor goes to Japan during the offseason to practice Aikido.
Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes does martial arts three or four times each week in the morning. Yan becomes the “Yanimal” - warming up with shadow boxing, stances, footwork, and mitt work to improve reaction.
Adam Dunn does boxing and kickboxing to improve throwing, swinging, fitness, and mental strength.
Catcher Russell Martin does mixed martial arts six days a week to boost his endurance, increase explosiveness, and lose body fat.
Pitcher Brad Penny says MMA prepares him in the event a hitter rushes the mound.
Pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith says MMA has helped him get in the shape of his life and increased his focus to strike out opposing hitters.
