NHL SCORING MACHINES
Martial arts helps hockey players stay physically strong on the ice against aggressive opponents and possess a fighting foundation when they engage in a fight on the ice. Hockey players also improve their hands, breathing and balance.
Hundreds of NHL hockey players practice martial arts including New York Islanders Matt Martin, Dallas’s Tyler Seguin, Philadelphia’s Wayne Simmonds, Anaheim’s Adam Henrique and Andrew Cogliano, St. Louis’s Robby Fabbri, Buffalo’s Jeff Skinner, Edmonton’s Darnell Nurse; Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, Jamie Oleksiak, Ryan Strome, and Dylan Strome; Montreal’s Max Domi.
Buffalo Sabres goalie Robin Lehner says “Mixed martial arts skills mimic read-and-reach elements needed in NHL, provide a more-engaging full-body workout, and readiness for the threat of an opponent looking to land punches and kicks in a brawl fight.”
Boston Bruins 7 foot hockey player Zdeno Chara, the tallest NHL hockey player ever, is known around the NHL as a workout fanatic. Zdeno’s agent Matt Keator says “He like his meats lean (ideally, eating rabbit), potato baked (no salt, butter, or sour cream), and veggies steamed (no dressing). Alcohol can lead to dehydration and decreased levels of testosterone so Zdeno stays away from alcohol. He also does wrestling and the martial art of aikido - dubbed as the most feared fighter in the NHL.”
