WORLD LEADERS SELF-DEFENSE
World leaders understand the importance of being physically fit. Taking the cue from Russian President Vladimir Putin who practices Judo, President Barack Obama trained in Taekwondo in Chicago, IL when he was a part-time state senator and was awarded an honorary black belt by South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak in 2009.
To treat asthma, President Theodore Roosevelt practiced Judo and President George H.W. Bush practiced Taekwondo with “the Father of American Taekwondo” Jhoon Rhee. Jhoon Rhee was legendary as he was inspired to train United States politicians as Americans helped the South Koreans when the North Koreans attempted to invade South Korea after World War II. Jhoon realized politicians needed martial arts training when Rep. James Cleveland (R-NH) was mugged one night so Jhoon phoned Rep Cleveland letting him know that he'd never get mugged again if he learned martial arts. This was the birth of the Congressional Tae Kwon Do Club who trained Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6:30AM. Over a 45 year span, Jhoon Rhee trained 350 politicians including Reps. Gene Taylor (D-MS), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), John Adler (D-NJ), Earl Pomeroy (D-ND), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL), Vice President Biden when he served in the Senate, House Speakers Newt Gingrich (R-GA), Tom Foley (D-WA), Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), Rep. Silvio Conte (R-MA), Sen Milton Young (R-ND), and Sen Joseph Montoya (D-NM).
